Our Story

In 1993, two transplant recipients were enjoying a golf outing, feeling blessed by having received the gift of life and being able to live again, unafraid of the future, just having fun. The realization of their gift descended upon them in the middle of a round, enveloping them almost like a fog rolling in off the misty sea.

Phil Berry, MD and George Crutcher decided at that moment there must be some tangible way they could 'pay something back' to the system that gave them new beginnings. They recalled their personal struggles at recovering from this life-saving transplant surgery, fighting for breath, for strength to walk again, to work again; only then to be faced with the realization of how much it cost to pay for the very medicines that would keep their bodies from rejecting their new organs. They saw first hand the struggles that other patients had, with no place to go when times got tough, remembering some who simply did not have the money to cover everyday expenses: medicines, trips to the doctor, phone bills, rent, house payments, and such.
